About Company

Abakkus Asset Manager LLP

Abakkus Asset Manager LLP is an alpha-focused asset manager based in India. Mr. Sunil Singhania founded it in 2018 and called it after the simplest ancient computing device, the abacus. The goal and aim of Abakkus is to become one of India’s most reputable and successful asset managers. This ideology has shaped the Abakkus portfolio’s beliefs: Keep things as straightforward as possible. Be a firm believer in the basics. Focus on the fundamentals and numbers.

What Is the Abakkus Emerging Opportunities Approach PMS?

The Abakkus Emerging Opportunities PMS is a benchmark-agnostic equity Portfolio Management Service with a clear mid and small-cap bias, managed by Sunil Singhania and the Abakkus investment team. The approach aims at alpha generation and risk-adjusted returns through bottom-up stock selection, valuation discipline and fundamental research.

The Abakkus Emerging Opportunities Approach was launched in August 2020 and had AUM of ₹5,943.14 crore as of June 30, 2026. The portfolio is built across market capitalisations, with a preference for companies where business fundamentals and valuations offer an attractive risk-reward equation.

Abakkus Investment Philosophy: Value, Risk and Contrarian Investing

The investment philosophy starts with the risk-reward equation. In simple terms, a stock should offer enough potential upside to justify the uncertainty involved.

The strategy combines value investing with growth-oriented stock selection. It looks for companies where earnings can grow meaningfully but where the market price does not fully reflect that potential.

A few principles define the approach:

  • Growth in value: The focus is not on buying cheap stocks blindly, but on finding businesses where growth and valuation create an attractive opportunity.
  • Bottom-up research: Investment decisions are based on company fundamentals, balance sheets, earnings and business prospects rather than market hype.
  • Contrarian approach: The strategy is willing to enter positions before an idea becomes widely accepted.
  • Patient investing: The approach follows a medium- to long-term outlook, with a typical 3–5 year holding period.
  • Buy and hold: Stocks are treated as investments in businesses rather than short-term trading positions.
  • Value-conscious selection: The strategy may prefer the second or third player in an industry when the market leader trades at an unusually high premium.

The underlying philosophy is straightforward: a good company is not automatically a good stock if the price paid is too high.

Abakkus 15:15:15 Investment Discipline

The 15:15:15 investment philosophy is a valuation and quality filter used in stock selection. The strategy predominantly looks for companies that qualify under at least two of these three parameters:

Parameter Preferred Level
Return on Equity (ROE) >15%
Earnings Growth >15%
Price-to-Earnings (P/E) <15x

The framework brings together profitability, growth and valuation. It is not a promise that every portfolio holding will meet all three conditions at all times; rather, it provides a disciplined starting point for identifying potentially attractive opportunities.

MEETS Framework: How Abakkus Selects Stocks

The MEETS framework provides the structure for evaluating individual investment opportunities.

Management

The team examines management capability, track record and capital allocation. It also considers whether management decisions create value for minority shareholders.

Earnings

Reported earnings are not taken at face value. The analysis looks at earnings quality, actual versus expected earnings and whether growth is structural or merely cyclical.

Events & Trends

Corporate events, upcoming developments and disruptive trends can create both buying and selling opportunities. The team looks for catalysts that could change how the market views a company.

Timing

Even a strong business can make a poor investment if purchased at the wrong price. Timing therefore includes examining valuation, market expectations and what the current share price is already discounting.

Structural

The analysis considers the size of the opportunity, competitive positioning or moat and the ability of a business to sustain profit growth.

The official PMS disclosure document states that the framework is used to pursue superior and consistent risk-adjusted returns.

What Is the Abakkus 5D Investment Process?

The 5D investment process takes the team from a broad stock universe to a focused portfolio.

Stage Investment Activity
Discover Screen a universe of around 6,000 companies and narrow it to approximately 1,500 investable names.
Delve Conduct detailed research on around 350 companies.
Develop Perform deeper macro and micro analysis on more than 100 companies, including management meetings, peer analysis and financial modelling.
Detail Narrow the opportunity set to around 75 potential investment ideas after considering valuation, liquidity, sector exposure and risk.
Deliver Build and monitor a portfolio of approximately 30 stocks, with regular reviews and a defined sell discipline.

The process combines quantitative screening with qualitative research. Importantly, getting through one stage does not guarantee that a stock reaches the final portfolio.

This 5D process also helps investors understand how portfolio construction works inside a professionally managed PMS strategy.

Abakkus Emerging Opportunities PMS Returns and Performance

For investors searching for an Abakkus Emerging Opportunities PMS review, performance needs to be viewed across multiple periods rather than through a single recent return.

As of June 30, 2026, the reported performance was:

Period Abakkus Emerging Opportunities BSE 500 TRI
1 Month 4.69% 1.73%
3 Months 19.25% 12.10%
6 Months 0.39% -3.53%
1 Year -1.69% -1.96%
2 Years 4.55% 1.52%
3 Years 17.34% CAGR 12.53% CAGR
4 Years 22.67% CAGR 15.29% CAGR
5 Years 16.32% CAGR 12.21% CAGR
Since Inception 26.43% CAGR 17.37% CAGR

The figures show why a Since Inception CAGR should not be viewed in isolation. Recent periods can be considerably different from the longer-term record. For example, the strategy's 1-year return was negative as of June 30, 2026, while its longer-term annualised figures remained higher than the benchmark over the reported periods.

Abakkus PMS Fees, Minimum Investment & Exit Load

The Abakkus PMS minimum investment is ₹50 lakh.

The fee structure provides two options:

Fee Option Structure
Fixed 2.50% p.a. of AUM
Fixed + Variable 1.75% p.a. of AUM + 15% profit share above a 9% hurdle rate, subject to high watermark

The Abakkus PMS exit load is:

  • 1.5% if the investment is redeemed within 12 months.
  • Nil after 12 months.

The latest official PMS disclosure document confirms a minimum initial corpus of ₹50 lakh.

Investors should evaluate the complete PMS fee structure, hurdle rate, profit-sharing terms and exit load when comparing PMS strategies before investing.

Who Should Consider Abakkus Emerging Opportunities PMS?

The strategy may be relevant for investors who:

  • Have at least ₹50 lakh available for PMS investment.
  • Have a 3–5 year or longer investment horizon.
  • Can tolerate the higher volatility associated with mid- and small-cap stocks.
  • Prefer active, fundamentals-driven portfolio management.
  • Are comfortable with a relatively concentrated equity portfolio.
  • Want exposure beyond large-cap companies.
  • Understand that equity returns can be uneven across market cycles.

This is not a strategy designed around predictable short-term returns. It is better suited to patient investors who can stay invested through periods of market volatility.

What to Expect from This Mid & Small Cap PMS

The portfolio's mid & small cap bias creates both its opportunity and its risk.

Smaller companies can offer greater room for earnings growth, but their share prices can also move sharply when market sentiment changes. Liquidity can become an additional consideration, particularly during stressed market conditions.

Investors should also expect periods when the strategy underperforms its benchmark or records negative returns. A portfolio of around 30 stocks offers diversification, but it is still concentrated enough for individual holdings and sectors to influence overall results.

The investment approach therefore makes more sense for investors seeking long-term alpha generation rather than those looking for short-term certainty.

The official disclosure document also identifies company, valuation, market, liquidity, concentration and volatility risks for the approach.

Abakkus Emerging Opportunities PMS vs Category III AIF

The Abakkus Emerging Opportunities Approach is a PMS, not a Category III AIF. The two are different investment structures even though both can provide professionally managed exposure to equities and alternative strategies.

Under PMS, the investor's portfolio is managed under a Portfolio Management Services agreement, with the investment approach applied to the client's portfolio. A Category III Alternative Investment Fund, on the other hand, operates as a pooled investment vehicle under the AIF framework.

Abakkus manages AIFs separately, but investors should not assume that an Abakkus PMS strategy and an Abakkus Emerging Opportunities AIF are the same product. The structure, documentation, fees, taxation and investment terms can differ.

Investors can also review the broader difference between PMS, mutual funds and AIFs before choosing the most suitable investment structure.

How Abakkus Emerging Opportunities Approach PMS Manages Risk

Business Risk

Understanding the business is the first line of defence. The strategy places emphasis on balance sheets, financial numbers and business sustainability before taking an investment decision.

Valuation Risk

A good company can still be a bad investment when bought at an excessive valuation. The team therefore reassesses whether the price remains reasonable as business prospects change.

Market Risk

The strategy does not attempt to consistently predict market direction. Instead, it relies on bottom-up research while monitoring broader economic and market conditions.

Liquidity Risk

Mid- and small-cap stocks can experience liquidity constraints. The strategy addresses this risk through portfolio construction and a medium- to long-term investment horizon.

Concentration Risk

The portfolio is diversified across sectors and stocks, but a focused portfolio can still experience higher volatility than a highly diversified index.

Avoiding the Four "Cs"

The investment philosophy also avoids four behaviours:

  • Churn Unnecessarily: Avoid needless trading.
  • Copy & Mimic: Do not blindly follow market consensus.
  • Credit Risk: Avoid businesses with fractured balance sheets that could become value traps.
  • Chase Momentum: Focus on fundamentals rather than simply following price movements.

Source: Abakkus latest factsheet.

Exit Discipline

Exit decisions can arise when the original investment thesis changes.

The strategy may reconsider a holding when:

  • Business fundamentals deteriorate materially.
  • Industry conditions change negatively.
  • Governance concerns emerge.
  • The original investment thesis no longer holds.
  • A new opportunity offers a materially better risk-reward proposition.

The objective is not to hold a stock indefinitely simply because it was once considered attractive.

It follows a benchmark-agnostic multi-cap strategy with a strong mid- and small-cap bias. The approach combines the 15:15:15 discipline, bottom-up research and the MEETS framework to identify potential alpha opportunities.

The strategy is led by Sunil Singhania, with Aman Chowhan also involved in portfolio management. Sunil Singhania founded Abakkus and previously served as CIO-Equities at Reliance Mutual Fund, while Aman Chowhan has extensive experience in Indian equities.

It may suit investors seeking long-term equity wealth creation who can tolerate mid- and small-cap volatility and have a 3–5 year or longer investment horizon.

Liquidity can be a short-term risk in mid- and small-cap stocks. The strategy therefore takes a medium- to long-term approach, and investors should not enter expecting guaranteed or immediate liquidity at a preferred price.

ALTPORT helps investors understand the strategy, compare investment options, navigate the onboarding process and access information needed to make an informed investment decision.

The minimum investment is ₹50 lakh. The official Abakkus PMS disclosure document specifies a minimum initial corpus of ₹50 lakh.

As of June 30, 2026, the reported Since Inception CAGR was 26.43%, compared with 17.37% for the BSE 500 TRI over the corresponding period. Past performance does not guarantee future results.

The Emerging Opportunities Approach is a PMS, where portfolio management is provided under a PMS agreement. A Category III AIF is a separate pooled investment structure governed by the AIF framework. They should not be treated as interchangeable products.

The fixed fee is 2.50% p.a. of AUM. The variable structure is 1.75% p.a. plus 15% profit sharing above a 9% hurdle, subject to the applicable high-water-mark provisions. Exit load is 1.5% within 12 months and nil thereafter.
