Rakshit has a professional background spanning UK equity research and Indian equity investing. He spent six years, from 2005 to 2011, covering UK equities at Lloyds Bank and Execution Noble. He subsequently led Ambit Capital's consumer research franchise before launching Ambit's Coffee Can PMS in March 2017, which he managed until December 2018.

His academic credentials include a B.Tech from IIT Delhi and the CFA charter. His career combines equity research, sector analysis, portfolio management and fundamental investment research.

Professional Background

Rakshit Ranjan began his equity research career in the UK market. Between 2005 and 2011, he covered UK equities through roles at Lloyds Bank, where he was Director of Institutional Equity Research, and Execution Noble, where he worked as a sector lead analyst. Marcellus states that during this period he was ranked among the top-three UK insurance analysts in the mid-cap segment in the Thomson Reuters Extel survey.

His UK experience gave him exposure to fundamental company analysis and sector research, particularly within the insurance industry. The six-year period also provided experience covering companies outside the Indian market and analysing businesses within a developed-market equity ecosystem.

From 2011, Rakshit led Ambit Capital's consumer research franchise. According to Marcellus disclosures, the franchise was voted No. 1 for Discretionary Consumer and among the top three for Consumer Staples in 2015 and 2016. These rankings are historical survey results and should be understood in that context.

In March 2017, Rakshit launched Ambit's Coffee Can PMS, which he managed until December 2018. Following this period, he joined Marcellus, where he became associated with the firm's Consistent Compounders strategy.

Today, Rakshit is identified by Marcellus as a Portfolio Manager and is responsible for the investment management of the Consistent Compounder Portfolio Investment Approach.

Investment Approach and Philosophy

Rakshit Ranjan's current investment role is closely associated with Marcellus' Consistent Compounders approach. The strategy focuses on businesses with characteristics such as clean accounts, strong capital allocation and sustainable competitive advantages. Marcellus describes its broader investment process as combining forensic accounting, fundamental analysis, competitive-advantage assessment and bottom-up research.

The Consistent Compounders strategy is built around identifying businesses that can potentially sustain cash-flow and earnings growth over extended periods. Marcellus' published process includes a forensic accounting screen, assessment of fundamental parameters such as revenue growth and return on capital, bottom-up research and independent third-party or channel checks.

A key part of this framework is the examination of competitive moats, capital allocation and cash generation. Marcellus describes companies with strong competitive advantages, prudent capital allocation and the ability to generate free cash flow as central characteristics of its investment philosophy.

The approach also emphasises long-term ownership rather than short-term market timing. Marcellus states that its investment process seeks to identify businesses capable of sustaining their competitive advantages and cash-flow generation over long periods.

Rakshit's background in UK equities, consumer research and portfolio management therefore spans several dimensions of fundamental investing: sector research, business-quality assessment, financial analysis and portfolio construction.

Educational Qualifications

Rakshit Ranjan holds a B.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT Delhi) and is a CFA charterholder. These qualifications are listed on his official Marcellus profile and in the firm's disclosure documents.

His educational background in engineering, combined with the CFA qualification, forms part of his professional foundation in financial analysis and investment management.

The CFA designation is particularly relevant to his career in portfolio management because it covers areas including investment analysis, portfolio management, ethics and financial reporting. His subsequent experience across UK equities, consumer research and PMS management adds practical investment experience to this academic foundation.

Strategies Managed at Marcellus

Rakshit Ranjan is the Portfolio Manager associated with Marcellus' Consistent Compounders strategy. The current Marcellus strategy page identifies him as CFA, Portfolio Manager, with a minimum investment of ₹50 lakh for the PMS offering.

The strategy focuses on companies that meet Marcellus' framework around accounting quality, capital allocation and competitive advantage. Its portfolio-construction process has historically involved screening a broader listed universe, followed by fundamental analysis and independent checks before arriving at a concentrated set of companies.

This approach is distinct from simply selecting stocks based on short-term price movements. The stated framework examines business fundamentals, financial statements, competitive positioning, capital allocation and the sustainability of cash generation.

Rakshit is part of Marcellus' broader investment-management team, alongside professionals such as Saurabh Mukherjea, the firm's Founder and Chief Investment Officer, and Ashvin Shetty, who is also part of the fund-management team. Their respective responsibilities should not be conflated with Rakshit's role as Portfolio Manager.

Research Expertise and Recognition

Rakshit brings six years of direct experience covering UK equities from 2005 to 2011, including work at Lloyds Bank and Execution Noble. During that period, Marcellus records that he was ranked among the top-three UK insurance analysts in the mid-cap space in the Thomson Reuters Extel survey.

His subsequent career at Ambit Capital expanded his research coverage into Indian consumer businesses. He led Ambit's consumer research franchise, which received survey recognition in Discretionary Consumer and Consumer Staples during 2015 and 2016.

This combination of international equity research and Indian consumer-sector analysis preceded his transition into portfolio management. His experience covers UK insurance research, Indian consumer research, PMS management and the fundamental-investing framework used within Marcellus' Consistent Compounders strategy.
